You should apply as a freshman if:
  • You are a graduating high-school senior, or
  • You have earned a high-school diploma or receieved qualifying GED scores and have not attended any postsecondary institution such as a college, university, community or junior college or vocational-technical school.
  • Your only college credit was earned while still attending high school.
A Complete Application Includes:
  • Application for Admission
  • $30 Application Fee
  • High School Transcript or GED scores
  • ACT or SAT scores
  • List of your senior year courses
  • Co-curricular Summary (for Scholarship applicants)
  • Scholarship Essay (for Scholarship applicants)
Your application will not be processed until all the above has been received.
KU Qualified Admission Standards

I. Graduating from an Accredited High School:
To qualify for admission, new freshmen must submit a completed application with the $30 fee before the April 1 deadline and meet one of the following requirements:

    Kansas Residents :

    • Achieve an ACT score of 21 or above or an *SAT score of 980 or above, or
    • Rank in the top one-third of their high-school class.
    • Earn at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0-point scale in the Kansas Board of Regents curriculum, or

    Out-of-State Residents :

    • Achieve an ACT score of 24 or above or an *SAT score of 1090 or above, or
    • Rank in the top one-third of their high-school class.
    • Earn at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0-point scale in the Kansas Board of Regents Curriculum, or

    *SAT combined score from Math and Critical Reading (verbal) sections only.

    New freshmen who are 2010 high school graduates only:

      You can be admitted within 48 hours:
    • If you are applying for admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or the School of Engineering (excludes architectural engineering).
    • If you apply online and pay the fee.
    • If KU has your test score on file at the time you apply and you meet the test score requirement. See test scores listed previously for automatic admission into the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For the School of Engineering (excluding architectural engineering), you must have a 28 math score (640 math SAT) and a 26 overall ACT composite (1170 SAT) for automatic admission.

II. Graduating from a Non-accredited School or a Home-school:
To qualify for admission, submit a completed application with the $30 fee before the April 1 deadline and meet the following requirement:

    Kansas Residents :

    • Achieve an ACT score of 21 or above or an *SAT score of 980 or above
    • If you do not meet the test score requirement, you can submit qualifying GED scores to be admitted.
    • High school transcript and ACT and/or *SAT scores must be submitted for application to be complete.

    Out-of-State Residents:

    • Achieve an ACT score of 24 or above or an *SAT score of 1090 or above
    • If you do not meet the test score requirement, you can submit qualifying GED scores to be admitted.
    • High school transcript and ACT and/or *SAT scores must be submitted for application to be complete.

III. Students with a GED:
To qualify for admission, submit a completed application with the $30 fee before the April 1 deadline and meet the following requirement:

    Kansas and Out-of-State Residents:
    • Achieve an overall score of 2550 on the GED with minimum scores of 510 on each subtest. If the GED was taken before January 1, 2002, the overall score must be 250 on the GED with minimum scores of 50 on each subtest.
    • Official GED scores and ACT and/or *SAT scores must be submitted for application to be complete. Test scores are required unless you are over the age of 21.
    • If you took the GED in Kansas, please request official GED scores be sent to KU from this website: http://www.kansasregents.org/adult_ed/ged.html.

    *SAT combined scores from math and critical reading (verbal) sections only.
KS Board of Regents Curriculum

  • English:  4 units required
    At least one year of English or language arts must be successfully completed for each year of high school.
  • Natural Science:  3 units required
    At least one year must be in chemistry or one year must be in physics. Students must successfully complete three years of natural sciences selected from the following:
         - One year of biology
         - One year of advanced biology
         - One year of chemistry      
         - One year of physics
         - One year of earth-space science
         - One year of principles of technology
  • Mathematics:  3 units required
    Students must successfully complete three years of mathematics at the Algebra I level and beyond.
  • Social Sciences:  3 units required
    Three years of social science with these specific classes (a one-semester course cannot be used to fulfill more than one requirement):
         - One semester of U.S. government
         - One semester selected from the following: world history, world geography, international relations
         - One year of U.S. history
         - Up to one year selected from the following: anthropology, current social issues, economics, race and ethnic group relations, sociology, psychology, U.S. history, or U.S. government
  • Computer Technology:  1 unit required
    One year of computer technology (basic computer/software skills) is required for 2009 graduates and earlier.  (Not required for 2010 graduates and beyond).

Earned Credit
KU accepts several kinds of non-traditional earned credit including Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, military courses and the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Retroactive credit is also offered in foreign-language classes, and ACT/SAT scores may exempt you from certain requirements.

Transfer Credit
Many classes at your current or former school may be transferred to KU. However, you must submit official transcripts of completed coursework before a final determination can be made.

NOTE:
Late applicants might be put on a waitlist depending on the size of the incoming class. There is no guarantee of admission or that the application will be processed by the first day of classes for late applicants.


Admission Status
Once your file is complete and the $30 application fee has been paid, the Office of Admissions and Scholarships will inform you of your status in three to four weeks. You must meet the minimum criteria to be considered for admission.
