Scholarship renewal and deferral
The Office of Admissions and Scholarships (OAS) offers both non-renewable and renewable scholarships. For more information on how to renew or defer renewable scholarships, about special circumstances, or about filing an appeal, please see below.
Renewing an OAS scholarship
If a prospective student is awarded a renewable scholarship by the Office of Admissions and Scholarships, several criteria must be met to retain the scholarship each year. The student must:
  1. Maintain a cumulative 3.25 GPA at KU.
  2. Be enrolled in a minimum of 24 credit hours for the academic year (fall and spring semesters).
Note: If you were awarded a Merit+Need scholarship, you must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and demonstrate financial need. We strongly encourage you to submit a FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible. Priority is given to those who file before March 1. The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Review of your OAS Scholarship
Scholarship review takes place in early June. If you meet the renewal criteria, your scholarship will be renewed for the following academic year. If you do not meet the renewal criteria, you will be placed on scholarship probation for the following year. Your scholarship will not be renewed if you do not meet the criteria during the probationary year.

Filing an Appeal
Opportunities for appeal of the committee’s decision will be mailed to you. Students will need to complete an appeal form, provide a current ARTS form or KU transcript and submit any additional materials for review. All decisions made by the committee are final.

Defer your OAS scholarship
You may defer your scholarship if special circumstances arise, but this must be approved by the Office of Admissions and Scholarships. If you wish your OAS scholarship to be deferred, you must fill out a Deferral Application. During this deferment period, you will not able to attend another college or university. All decisions made by the committee are final.

Alter your OAS scholarship
Students who want to alter the terms of their scholarships must recognize that such changes may be made only in special circumstances.

The OAS scholarships are for use in the fall and spring semesters only. Special consideration can be given only if you are graduating early and would like scholarship support for your final summer session, and you must fill out the Special Circumstances Application Form. All decisions made by the committee are final.
